Motorcycle Trader mag final

Motorcycle Trader magazine announced its shutdown on March 24, 2020.

Here's the full statement:

Australia’s most endearing and relatable motorcycle magazine, Motorcycle Trader, has been discontinued. The April edition (issue 358), which has just reached newsstands, will be the last.

Motorcycle Trader was launched in 1994 as a vehicle for classified advertising. Prior to the arrival of the internet, it regularly achieved circulation figures of more than 30,000 copies per month.

With the reduction in classified advertising, MT transformed successfully into a highly regarded consumer title with an eclectic mix of buying/selling and workshop advice as well as a unique take on motorcycling, old bikes and new. It quickly became known and highly respected for its journalistic accuracy and integrity as well as its unique, tongue-in-cheek humour.

MT’s editorial lineup included industry heavyweights Grant Roff, Guy Allen, John Rooth, Ian Falloon and Isle of Man TT champion Cam Donald. Other key contributors to have made a significant impact include the late Ken Wootton, former editors Greg Leech, Rob Blackbourn and Mike Sinclair as well as Barry Ashenhurst, Rod Chapman, Sean Muir, Karen Anderson, Wolter Kuiper and Ben Galli to name a few.

While MT’s circulation has remained strong, the market volatility of current pandemic events has reduced the industry support required to maintain the quality MT readers expect every four weeks.

MT editor Chris Harris says it’s a melancholy day for motorcycle magazine readers and Australia’s motorcycle industry at large.

“Motorcycle Trader has provided an honest sense of community among its readers and relatable writers like no other outlet. From an editorial viewpoint, we’ve absolutely poured our hearts and souls into making every edition the most informative, entertaining and engaging it could possibly be. While it’s incredibly sad to see the magazine’s closure, it’s preferable to continuing with lower standards,” he said.

“I’d like to thank our incredibly loyal readers for their unswerving support over the past 26 years and also those in the motorcycle industry who understood that a healthy motorcycle media is necessary to grow the culture.

“Ironically, our cover story in the final issue is about the closure of Norton. Make sure you buy a copy. Like every edition of MT, it’s a brilliant read that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s been a brilliant ride.”
